Christopher Phillips is Lecturer in the International Relations of the Middle East at Queen Mary, University of London. He has lived in Syria for several years and was formerly Syria and Jordan specialist for the Economist Intelligence Unit. Everyday Arab Identity is his first book.

Jan De Vos is a researcher at the faculty of Philosophy and Moral Sciences at Ghent University, Belgium.

About the Author

Richard Holt is Professor of History in the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. He is the author of Sport and Society in Modern France (1981), Sport and the British: A modern history (1989) and Sport in Britain: 1945–2000 (2000, jointly with Tony Mason). He has co-edited several essay collections, most recently Sport and the Transformation of Europe (2011, jointly with Christopher Young and Alan Tomlinson) and has published extensively in a wide range of academic journals. He is a former Director of the International Master in Humanities, Management and Law of Sports programme at De Montfort University.

Dino Ruta is Professor of Human Resources and Sport Management at SDA Bocconi School of Management, Italy. He is Scientific Director of the FIFA International Master in Humanities, Management and Law of Sports, and Director of the Sport Knowledge Center at SDA Bocconi School of Management. He is also Director of the Master in Organization and Human Resources Management at Bocconi University. His research activities are focused on people strategy, leadership and sport management. He has been invited to present his research in Argentina, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. He also works with CEOs and leadership teams in aligning people and business strategy. He has published in leading academic journals such as Human Resource Management and the International Journal of Human Resource Management. He is the author of Leading Teams (2013, with P. Guenzi).

James Panter is Research Officer at the International Centre for Sports History and Culture, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. He also co-ordinates the International MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport which is delivered in partnership with the Centre International d’Etude du Sport, SDA Bocconi School of Management and University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He has worked on a number of international sports research projects and has a wide knowledge of contemporary sport.

The work argues that many of the problems encountered in the development of deterrence theory lay in the fact that it was developed during the Cold War, when the immediate problem it had to address was how to prevent catastrophic nuclear wars. The logic of nuclear deterrence compelled a preoccupation with the problem of stability over credibility; however, because the logic of conventional deterrence is different, the solution of the tension between credibility and stability is achieved by deference to credibility, due to the requirements of reputation and costly signaling.

This book aims to narrow the gap between theory and evidence. It explores how a reconceptualization of the theory as a process that culminates in the internalization of deterrence within enduring rivalries is better suited to account for its final success: a finding that has eluded deterrence theorists for long.

This interdisciplinary book will be of much interest to students of deterrence theory, strategic studies, international security, Middle Eastern studies and IR in general.

Although the country with the strongest social democratic traditions in Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic also produced the region’s strongest and most durable party of the free market right in Václav Klaus’ Civic Democratic Party (ODS). Seán Hanley considers the different varieties of right-wing politics that emerged in post-communist Europe, exploring in particular detail the origins of the Czech neo-liberal right, tracing its genesis to the reactions of dissidents and technocrats to the collapse of 1960s reform communism. He argues that, rather than being shaped by distant historical legacies, the emergence of centre-right parties can best be understood by examining the responses of counter-elites, outside or marginal to the former communist party-state establishment, to the collapse of communism and the imperatives of market reform and decommunization. This volume goes on to consider the emergence of right-wing forces in the disintegrating Civic Forum movement in 1990, the foundation of the ODS, the right’s period in office under Klaus in 1992-97, and its subsequent divisions and decline. It concludes by analyzing the ideology of the Czech Right, and its growing euroscepticism.
