About the Author

Phil McManus is an Associate Professor at the School of Geosciences, University of Sydney, Australia. His research interests include sustainable cities, environmental management and human–animal relations, particularly those involving thoroughbred breeding and jumps racing. He has produced publications about thoroughbred breeding and jumps racing. Phil has authored/edited four other books, most recently Rural Revival? (with John Connell, 2011). He is also the President of the Institute of Australian Geographers (2012–14).

Glenn Albrecht is a transdisciplinary philosopher who holds the position of Professor of Sustainability at Murdoch University, Perth, Australia. He researches and writes on the connections between ecosystem and human mental health and animal ethics. He has published widely in animal and environmental ethics over the last two decades.

Raewyn Graham is a PhD student based in the School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney, Australia. She has a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Her research interests include illegal horserace gambling, eque-cultural events and human–animal relations.

Wow-- overpriced and rough reading

Was very excited by the release of a book exclusively about the horseracing industry.. until I received this. Barely larger than a pamphlet and less than 200 pages of actual content..waaaay overpriced at $100 bucks...I guess I was expecting something more like a text book with practical information that would be useful to someone new to the industry.

The content also reads like a thesis paper..dry, academic and chock full of external references to the original data sources. Also not really sure who this is intended for..contains some history..some philosophy, some socio-economic data and some anthropological information (some of which is not even accurate- authors should check actual NYS breeding statistics and correct).

The book also is positioned oddly--it is not really geared toward fans, bettors, racetrack personnel or individuals involved in related industries like breeding or training...perhaps regulators or social science students would find it interesting- just not sure who the intended audience is.

Will be the only time I have ever returned a book to Amazon-- but back it goes

I found “The Global Horseracing Industry” a fascinating and informative read without any unnecessary padding or repetition. It looks at horseracing in a way that I have been missing in other publication about horseracing. It deals with the four dimensions - the social, economic, environmental and the ethical – and thus offers insights into the structure of the industry. One of the tools used to achieve this is taking the perspective of different players in the industry – including the perspective of those who make it all possible in the first place, the thoroughbreds. In doing so, the book highlights one of the crucial issues of our time: our changing relationship with non-human animals. In light of this change process, and based on their research, the authors found that “the future of thoroughbred breeding and racing is most threatened by the ethical challenges it faces” and these “are increasingly leaving the sport and industry as appearing archaic when compared with other industries and activities”.

To me, the book functions like a reference guide. It gives a bird’s eye view of horseracing as a global industry and a better understanding of how the various pieces fit together: how the ethics are intertwined with the economies of breeding, selling and racing, how deeply interconnected breeding, racing and gambling are, the role of gambling in structuring the industry, that there is such a thing as an “experience economy” as one of the drivers of the industry, the role of new money and impact of emerging markets such as China, the role of tradition and innovation - to name a few of the phenomena. A mix of approaches seemed necessary to do justice to the many perspectives and dimensions covered in the book.

The book appears to be written for academics and professionals. Of particular interest to all audiences should be the future scenarios that the authors unfold: horseracing that is less about horseracing itself rather than being about the carnival created around it as a social event; the consequences of economic decline; animal ethics as a driver for change; “new frontiers and expansion” - geographically, in terms new money entering the industry, and in terms of changing geopolitical powers; the consequences of a “brave new world” where thoroughbred breeders may embrace voluntarily or by way of legal challenges new reproductive technologies; and a decline of horseracing in the traditional countries but expanding in emerging markets. Likely futures are developed based on a combination of these outlooks.

The authors have set a number of signposts for future work - for example, for the further exploration of the possibility of a “whispering ethic” to allow for a continued co-evolution of horse and human, and the need to look at the industry in more than the narrow economic terms when assessing its sustainability if it wants to have a future.

This book is well referenced which makes it easy to follow up on sources. It can be expected to be part of the beginning of a wave of writings and critical engagement with horseracing. And if, after all this, there are still people out there wondering about how to make a small fortune out of racing, the authors would advise to “start with a large fortune”.

About the Author

Fiona Kennedy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, was formerly an NHS Director of Psychology and is now MD of GreenWood Mentors Ltd. She has published on dissociation and specializes clinically in adult survivors of trauma, personality disorder and dissociation.

Helen Kennerley, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, is a founder member of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and Director of the Diploma/MSc in Advanced Cognitive Therapy Studies. She is an experienced clinician specializing in childhood trauma, dissociative disorders and self-injurious behaviours.

David Pearson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, is a specialist in child and adolescent mental health, formerly an NHS Head of Psychology and Honorary Tutor at the University of Southampton. He has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals.

Investigating changes in upbringing in the North Caucasus, a region notorious for violent conflict, this book explores the lives of the generation born after the dissolution of the USSR who grew up under conditions of turmoil and rapid social change. It avoids the ‘traditional’ presentation of the North Caucasus as a locus of violence, and instead presents the life of people in the region through the lens of the young generation growing up there.

Using focus groups with teachers and students of different ethnic groups, as well as surveys and essays written by children, the book suggests that while the legacy of conflict plays a role in many children’s lives, it is by no means the only factor in their upbringing. It explores how conflict has influenced upbringing, and goes on to consider factors such as the revival of religion, the impact of social and economic upheaval, and the shifting balance between school and parents. As well as revealing the dynamic influences on children’s upbringing in the region, the book presents recommendations on how to address some of the challenges that arise. The historical shift from Vedic traditions to post-Vedic bhakti (devotional) traditions is accompanied by a shift from abstract, translocal notions of divinity to particularized, localized notions of divinity and a corresponding shift from aniconic to iconic traditions and from temporary sacrificial arenas to established temple sites. In Bhakti and Embodiment Barbara Holdrege argues that the various transformations that characterize this historical shift are a direct consequence of newly emerging discourses of the body in bhakti traditions in which constructions of divine embodiment proliferate, celebrating the notion that a deity, while remaining translocal, can appear in manifold corporeal forms in different times and different localities on different planes of existence. Holdrege suggests that an exploration of the connections between bhakti and embodiment is critical not only to illuminating the distinctive transformations that characterize the emergence of bhakti traditions but also to understanding the myriad forms that bhakti has historically assumed up to the present time.

This study is concerned more specifically with the multileveled models of embodiment and systems of bodily practices through which divine bodies and devotional bodies are fashioned in Krsna bhakti traditions and focuses in particular on two case studies: the Bhagavata Purana, the consummate textual monument to Vaisnava bhakti, which expresses a distinctive form of passionate and ecstatic bhakti that is distinguished by its embodied nature; and the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition, an important bhakti tradition inspired by the Bengali leader Caitanya in the sixteenth century, which articulates a robust discourse of embodiment pertaining to the divine bodies of Krsna and the devotional bodies of Krsna bhaktas that is grounded in the canonical authority of the Bhagavata Purana.

It investigates how each of the different levels of China’s local administration has developed historically, both before and after 1949; and it explores the functions, political and economic, that the different levels and units carry out, and how their relationships with superior and subordinate units have evolved over time. It also discusses how far the post-Mao reforms have affected local administration, and how the local administrative hierarchy is likely to develop going forward.

I found this book very helpful to understand how food aid is working today to approach the food insecurity global challenge. It has an ABC approach that explains past, present and even offer good ideas on how to move forward. I think this is a "must read" book for those interested in these issues.
