This book examines Islam and women’s everyday life, focusing in particular on the highly controversial issue of polygamy. It discusses the competing interpretations of the Qur’anic verses that are at the heart of Muslim controversies over polygamy, with some groups believing that Islam enshrines polygamy as a male right, others seeing it as permitted but discouraged in favour of monogamy, and other groups arguing that Islam implicitly prohibits polygamy. Based on detailed fieldwork conducted in Indonesia, it provides an empirically-based account of women’s lived experiences in polygamous marriages, describing the different perceptions of the practice and strategies in dealing with it. It also considers the impact of changing public policy, in particular Indonesia’s 1974 Marriage Law which restricted the practice of polygamy. It shows that, in fact, this law has not resulted in widespread adherence, and considers how public policy could be modified to increase its effectiveness in affecting behaviour in everyday life. Overall, the book argues that polygamy has been a source of injustice towards women and children, that this is against Islamic teaching, and that a just Islamic law would need to call for the abolition of polygamy.

Nina Nurmila is a lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Education and Teaching, the State Islamic University (UIN) Bandung, Indonesia. She is currently a Fulbright Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Redlands, USA. She was previously an Endeavour Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. Her research interest is Gender and Islam in Muslim Societies, especially Indonesia.

Torturing Terrorists examines, as part of a consequentialist analysis, the nature and impact of torture and the implications of its legal regulation on individuals, institutions and wider society. In making an argument against the use of torture, the book engages in a wide ranging interdisciplinary analysis of the arguments and claims that are put forward by the proponents and opponents of legalised torture.

This book examines the ticking bomb hypothetical and explains how the component parts of the hypothetical are expansively interpreted in theory and practice. It also considers the effectiveness of torture in producing ‘ticking bomb’ and ‘infrastructure’ intelligence and examines the use of interrogational torture and coercion by state officials in Northern Ireland, Algeria, Israel, and as part of the CIA’s ‘High Value Detainee’ interrogation programme. As part of an empirical slippery slope argument, this book examines the difficulties in drafting the text of a torture statute; the difficulties of controlling the use of interrogational torture and problems such a law could create for state officials and wider society. Finally, it critically evaluates suggestions that debating the legalisation of torture is dangerous and should be avoided.

About the Author

Phillip NS Rumney is professor of criminal justice at Bristol Law School, UWE. He has written a number of articles on the debate over the legalisation of interrogational torture, including a detailed analysis of the effectiveness (or otherwise) of torture as a means of producing accurate and timely intelligence disclosures. He has also authored work that examines the way in which interrogational torture can serve to undermine counter-terrorism strategies by provoking retaliation or hardening the resolve of terrorist groups and their supporters.

Amongst his various research interests Phil engages in research concerning rape and freedom of expression. This work has been cited in various government reports, reviews and Parliamentary debates. He is actively engaged in several empirical and developmental projects concerning sexual violence, including a school-based sexual violence myth busting project; a domestic and sexual violence bystander intervention project; an evaluation of a specialist police rape investigation unit and a study of attitudes towards people charged with serious criminal offences. Outside of work, Phil is a passionate fan of boxing.

The author engages with Anglo-American constitutional theory as well as examining the theory and practise of constituent power in different constitutional regimes (including Latin American countries) where constituent power has become an important part of the left’s legal and political discourse. About the Author

Barry Drust is a Reader in Applied Exercise Physiology at the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences, Liverpool John Moore’s University. His main research interests are the physiology of intermittent exercise and temperature regulation. He has published numerous books and journal articles on the physiology of soccer players.

Thomas Reilly was Director of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moore's University from 1996 to 2009. He is the Chair of the International Steering Group for Science and Football, and for 13 years was Chair of the Exercise Physiology Steering Group of the British Olympic Association. He was awarded a Doctor of Science degree for his research work in 1999 and has worked in sports science support roles with professional football teams and Olympic Games athletes.

A. Mark Williams is Professor of Motor Behaviour at the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences, Liverpool John Moore's University. He has published widely in areas related to motor control and learning, sport psychology, performance analysis and talent identification.

The following review is based on the 2010 American/Canadian edition. This book is relatively technical. It is loaded with graphs, diagrams, photos of experiments, etc. It is not the typical how-to-play soccer book. Various chapters cover pediatric soccer, the physiological demands of soccer on the human body, the psychological aspects of playing soccer, dealing with soccer injuries, and curriculum design in coaching.

Owing to the breadth of the subject matter of this book, I focus exclusively on the Shinkai et al. study (Chapter 8) of male Japanese players aged 9-15 and the improvement of their kicking efficacy with age. (pp. 57-59). Foot speeds during kicking ranged from 14.6 m/sec (32.7 mph) to 20.5 m/sec (45.9 mph). The corresponding initial speeds of the kicked soccer balls ranged from 14.5 m/sec (32.4 mph) and 28.9 m/sec (64.6 mph). The ball/foot speed ratio, ranging from 0.98 to 1.42, increased with age, reflecting the greater efficacy of the foot-ball contact during the kick. The time of contact of the foot and ball ranged from 8.5 to 10 milliseconds. The average effective striking mass of the limb, computed from the conservation-of-momentum equation of Plagenhoef's 1971 study, was about 0.7-0.9 kg for 9-10 year olds, 1.0-1.3 kg for 11-12 year olds, and 1.5 kg (and up) for older players. The body mass of the players strongly correlated with both the foot speed before impact and the average effective striking mass of the limb.
