The rise of corporatism in the North American University was charted by Bill Readings in the mid nineteen-nineties in his book The University in Ruins. Drawing on the work of critics and philosophers such as Barthes, Derrida, Lyotard and Deleuze, The University in Dissent suggests that this can only be achieved subversively through the development of a ‘community of philosophers’ who are prepared to challenge, critique and subvert the mission statement of the ‘university of excellence’ from within, focusing on how scholarly and academic thought and writing might develop in this new post-Enlightenment era.

Summarising, contextualising and extending previous understandings of the rise of corporatism and the subsequent demise of the traditional aims and values of the university, Rolfe assesses the situation in contemporary UK and international settings. He recognises that changes to the traditional idea of the university are inevitable and explores some of the challenges and consequences of this shift in the academic world, suggesting how academics can work with change, whilst at the same time seeking to undermine its worst excesses.

This timely and thought provoking book is a must-read for all academics at University level, as well as education policy makers.

About the Author

Thomas Ugelvik is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo, Norway. His Ph.D. is an ethnography of prisoner-subjectivation processes in and through the everyday life and power struggles of the institution. His research interests also include crime and the media, gender issues, and cultural criminology. He has published on violence against prison officers, power/resistance relationships in prison, and masculinity theory.

Jane Dullum is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo, Norway. In her Ph.D. she analysed the development of the psychiatric institutions in Norway, with a special focus on the decarceration of the mentally ill. She has done research on economic crime, restorative justice, topics regarding the rule of law, prisons and prison education, and miscarriages of justice.

Because the autocracy lacked the necessary resources for the reform, it created new institutions with real powers and autonomy, particularly the mirovoi posrednik, or 'peace arbitrator'. The results of this strategy differed in practice from the authorities’ original intentions. The new institutions invigorated Russian political life, introduced norms that challenged centuries-old customs and traditions, and fostered a nascent civil society, allowing Russia to follow the basic trajectory of Western European socio-political development.

John R. Schlapobersky is a Training Analyst, Supervisor and Teacher at the Institute of Group Analysis, London and Research Fellow, Birkbeck, University of London. A beautifully written book

A thoughtful, beautifully written work about the value of group therapy and how a skillful group analyst--trained in Foulkesian group analysis--thinks about the various therapeutic elements of group. While a layperson might find the details of some chapters to be too much information, the book provides a framework for group therapists (or therapists interested in leading groups) that appeals to both the intellect and the heart. I was especially intrigued by the chapters that delineate some of the differences between the Foulkesian analytic model and the north American model of interpersonal group therapy. And the clinical scenarios throughout speak to the more emotionally engaging moments in a therapy group--these carefully crafted scenarios reminded me of difficult moments in my own groups and helped me find words for a process that so often seems to defy language itself. Ultimately, this book has inspired me to take more risks as a group leader and to appreciate more fully the healing power of group, even when I don't have the words to understand the process as it unfolds.
