About the Author

David Beard is Senior Lecturer in Music at Cardiff University, UK. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, including Cambridge Opera Journal, Music Analysis, and Twentieth-Century Music, and is the author of Harrison Birtwistle’s Operas and Music Theatre (2012). He co-edited Harrison Birtwistle Studies (2015) and has contributed chapters to Ancient Drama in Music for the Modern Stage (2010) and Peter Maxwell Davies Studies (2009). He sits on the editorial board of the journal Music & Letters.

Kenneth Gloag is Professor of Music at Cardiff University, UK. His publications include books on Tippett’s A Child of Our Time (1999) and Nicolas Maw’s Odyssey (2008). He is author of Postmodernism in Music (2012), and has co-edited and contributed chapters to Peter Maxwell Davies Studies (2009), The Cambridge Companion to Michael Tippett (2013), and Harrison Birtwistle Studies (2015). He was inaugural reviews editor of the journal Twentieth-Century Music (2004–12).

Susan Hogan is Professor of Cultural Studies and Art Therapy at the University of Derby, UK. She has written extensively on the relationship between the arts and insanity, the role of the arts in rehabilitation and on women’s issues in art therapy.

Annette M. Coulter is a British-trained and Australian-based art psychotherapist specialising in children, adolescents, families, groups and couples. She has pioneered art therapy training and professional development in Australia and Singapore. Examining the international politics of the Red Sea region from the Cold War to the present day, it argues that the Red Sea area demonstrates the characteristics of a sub-regional system, given its increasing economic and social interdependence, greater regional integration, and flows of resources across it. It details how stronger regional powers - Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia - which co-habit the sub-region with much weaker, vulnerable and fragile states, are seeking to stamp their own authority on this dynamic sub-region. They have attempted to do so, the authors show, through extension of their military and economic influence where ever possible, while also forging regional partnerships aimed at protecting their interests or to fend off possible encroachment of others. The book discusses in great detail the security and military dynamics of the sub-region; land and maritime borders; as well as economic issues, including trade, migration, capital flows and transport. Individual case studies explore key aspects of Khrushchev's period of office, including the introduction of the 1961 Communist Party Programme and popular responses to it, housing policy, the opening up of the Soviet Union to the West during the 1957 youth festival, public consultation campaigns and policy implementation in education and family law, the boost given to voluntary organisations such as women's councils and the trade unions, the reshaping of the internal Soviet security apparatus, the emergence of political dissent and the nature of civil-military relations as reflected in the events of the workers' uprising in Novocherkassk in 1962. The findings offer an important new perspective on the Khrushchev era.

About the Author

David Hesmondhalgh teaches in the Institute of Communications Studies at the University of Leeds, where he is Professor of Media and Music Industries, Director of Research, and Head of the Media Industries Research Centre (MIRC). His publications include The Cultural Industries (2nd edition, 2007).

Sarah Baker is Lecturer in Cultural Sociology at Griffith University, Australia. She has previously held research fellowships at The Open University and University of Leeds, UK, and the University of South Australia. She is the author of numerous refereed journal articles and book chapters.
