About the Author

Rich Neil is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Psychology, former Discipline Director of Research Methods and current Programme Director of BSc Sport and Exercise Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. His research interests include the influence of stress and emotions on behaviour, personality, reflective practice and self-efficacy.

Sheldon Hanton is the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Research for Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. As Professor of Sport Psychology his subject expertise focuses around competition and organisational stress and anxiety, mental toughness, performance reflection and the psychology of injury. He has experience of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research, including intervention studies.

Scott Fleming is Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies and Director of Research at the Cardiff School of Sport, Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK. His research interests include ethnographies in sport, leisure and education, ‘race relations’, and research ethics. He is a former Chair of the Leisure Studies Association and is Chair of Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Ethics Committee.

Kylie Wilson is an Applied Sport Psychologist working with Olympic athletes and coaches, and organisations at High Performance Sport New Zealand. Her research interests include athlete motivation, coach–athlete relationships, group dynamics and reflective practice.

As a primary school teacher, I can find design and technology projects a bit daunting. Almost nothing frustrates me more than having a class full of children making a mess with paper, scissors and glue. However, a book like this has the potential to transform that teacher’s nightmare into creative bliss, fuelling the children’s imaginations and turning those sheets of paper into imaginative and exciting creations. From a stand-alone project, something to keep children amused during free time, or a cross-curricular topic, this is a valuable resource for anyone who works with, or has, children.

The book is divided into two main sections, with progressively harder designs. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, accompanied by labelled diagrams, which will appeal especially to visual learners. At the start of the book is a list of thematic contents, making it quick and easy to refer to something specific - from Little Red Riding Hood, to Macbeth, it could be an interesting way of engaging children in literature, for example, by bringing the stories alive. What I find particularly interesting about this book, is the fact that there are no precise measurements for the designs, making room for individuality and a little creative licence. Ultimately, as the author himself states, "making things with the hands is at the core of learning", and this book facilitates that in a wonderful way. I am looking forward to creating some interesting things with my pupils!

About the Author

Paul Johnson has an international reputation for his pioneering work in developing literacy through the book arts and is author of over 15 titles including Pop-up Paper Engineering (Falmer, 1992). A successful book artist with work in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, the National Gallery and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC as well as many US universities, his work has been selected for a number of awards and exhibitions including Stand and Deliver, a US touring exhibition of pop-up editioned books.

A Definite Must-Have for the Paper Engineer/Artist!

This book by Paul Johnson is a virtual feast of his popular pop-up workshops. With well-diagrammed illustrations and easy to follow directions, this is a complete manual for creating most of Paul Johnson's magical three-dimensional structures. From the easy to the more challenging, this book takes one from beginning to end building on previous structures to teach and direct the reader/student in the world of pop-ups. There are also innovative hinging structures such as the mortise and tenon that Paul Johnson uses that are unique to his works. Over the past three decades, decentralization has been seen as the means for allowing local governments to become more accountable, and for encouraging the deepening of democracy and the building of village communities. By drawing on original village-level case studies of six villages in three different Indian states, this book presents a systematic analysis of the impact of decentralization on the delivery of social services at the local level within India.

Supplementing national and state-level data and analyzing the different historical legacies in each state, the book argues that decentralization is not simply a function of the structure of the decentralization program or of the relationship between higher-tiered and local government. Rather, the possibility of decentralization affecting social outcomes depends on several interacting factors, including the distribution of power among local elites, the dynamics of political competition, and the level of civil society mobilization. By examining constitutionally-mandated political decentralization across India, this book identifies the circumstances under which local government structures can lead to improved social services and societal wellbeing, as well as presenting a substantial contribution to studies on South Asian Politics and Local Government.

Wonderful text

This book is the best guide to qualitative research I've ever encountered. It is clear and easy to read, with great examples of qualitative practice sprinkled throughout.

I believe this book is so clear and easy to read because it is a positive, non-defensive book. Many qualitative researcher seem to feel their field is "under attack," and respond by writing qualitative books which preach to the reader or seem to defend against accusations the reader may not care about. Not only is the constant defensiveness annoying, it's completely baffling for anyone new to qualitative research, unfamiliar with the complicated histories of qualitative inquiry. This is the first, the only qualitative book I've seen which doesn't take an overtly defensive stance. Concepts are explained on their own merits, which makes this book a thousand times more readable and enjoyable than most other texts on this topic.

The second part is concerned with the causes and mechanisms of climate and weather changes, including chapters discussing Christmas weather, fronts and volcanoes. In the final part Hubert Lamb looks to the future, and attempts to put into perspective some of the pessimistic forecasts currently available. The text, which is consistently authoritative but always readable, is augmented by numerous maps, diagrams and photographs.
