In addition to considering this legal history, the book also addresses the contemporary relevance of Foucault’s theoretical framework. Structured around Foucault’s archetypes and the category crises they represent – admixed embryos, conjoined twins and transsexuals – the book analyses their challenge to current distinctions between human and animal, male and female, and the idea of the ‘proper’ legal subject as a single embodied mind. These contemporary figures, like the monsters of old, are shown to threaten the rigidity and binary structure of a law that still struggles to accommodate them.

This book does provide interesting insight into Japanese culture and mentality. Though it does provide interesting concepts, it is not a page turner. The reading is a bit dry, If you're looking for more of a culture aspect such as festivals and food, this is not your book. This focuses more on the mentality and how people in the community interact with each other.

About the Author

Renaud Gicquel is Professor at the École des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech), France. He has a special interest and passion for the combination of thermodynamics and energy-powered system education with modern information technology tools and developed various software packages to facilitate the teaching of applied thermodynamics and the simulation of energy systems.

Professional background: Renaud Gicquel was trained as a mining engineer and obtained his PhD in the same discipline an the Paris VI University in Paris. In the early eighties, he started his professional life as a Special Assistant to the Secretary General at the United Nations Conference in New York on new and renewable sources of energy. After positions at the French General Electric Company and the Ministry of Research and Technology, he was the advisor for Internatioanl Issues at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). IN 1986, together with Michel Grenon, he founded the Mediterranean Energy Observatory (OME) in Sophia Antipolis in the South of France. In the early nineties, he was the Deputy Director of the Ecole des Mines de Nantes (EMN) and Head of the Energy Systems and Environment Department. He also acted at the coordinator of ARTEMIS, a thermal energy research group, which he created in partnership with the University of Nantes and Polytech Nantes. Since the mid eighties, Dr Gicquel continued his academic career at the Centre for Energy Studies of the Ecole de Mines de Paris. Acting as the head and as a full professor, he teaches applied thermodynamics, global energy issues and energy system modeling. His research activities are focused on the optimization of complex thermodynamic plants and on the use of information and communication technologies for scientific instructions. He developed several software packages and published two textbooks. To facilitate the student’s learning of applied thermodynamics and the simulation of energy systems better, he developed the Thermoptim software system, which has been supported since 2006 by the portal www.thermoptim.org.

Not bad for a "companion text"

An "Introduction to Book History" is meant to be a companion text to "The Book History Reader," which is, of course, edited by Finklestein and McCleery. Knowing this before I read An Introduction to Book History made me a bit suspicious. The idea of "companion texts" seems to be more of a marketing scheme and of dubious value to the reader. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Finkelstein and McCleery have summarized the most important components of Book History in a readable and well-organized format. Some readers might find the format a bit pedantic, but this format will probably be helpful for undergraduate readers being introduced to Book History for the first time or for those readers who want a general overview of the field. At the beginning of each chapter, Finkelstein and McCleery clearly state their goals for the chapter in question, "This chapter covers the main theories and general themes that have developed in the Book History studies over the past century....After a brief summary of the terminology now commonly used to describe book history at work, the chapter looks at how book historians have characterized different stages in the history of books in Western European culture...."(7). Pedantic? Absolutely, but as I mentioned earlier, this will probably be helpful to the reader making their first encounter with Book History. Readers already familiar with the ins and outs of book history will, undoubtedly, find this book dull and repetitive. But those already familiar with the subject are clearly not the intended audience of "An Introduction to Book History." Chapters address the shift from orality to literacy, the impact of print, the relationship between printers, booksellers, publishers, and agents, and the history of readers and reading. The authors also include a glossary and a fairly detailed bibliography. "An Introduction to Book History" is a slim volume and can easily be read in a single sitting. It will be a good resource for those teaching book history to undergraduates. It is a shame that it is marketed as a "companion text," because it clearly can stand on its own.

A Good Introduction

Finklestein and McCleery's "An Introduction to Book History" is a very good introduction to the history of books, book production and the history of reading. I really enjoyed how the author's summarized and provided conclusions for each chapter of the book. Though a short text there is a wealth of information about the origins of both writing and books. The authors also provided citations to other, more specific works on book history.

What I did not like however, is that Finklestein and McCleery focus almost exclusively on the "history of the theory of book history". Though I suppose for an introductory text this is to be expected. I felt there was not enough focus on how the book has changed throughout history. There is information on how people consumed books, but there is only scant on how books were produced.

Overall, I felt this was a worthwhile introduction to book history but was lacking due to its brevity in the treatment of certain topics in book history. Having used this book for a grad school course I kept it mostly for its references to other works on book history.

I bought this book to help give me a background for some study work. I found it to be unexpectedly fascinating and very well-written. I had originally only rented it, but then went back to purchase a copy.

Shakespeare, Performance and the Archive creates a deeply materialized historiography of performance and attempts to make that history do something entirely new.

Barbara Hodgdon is Professor of English at the University of Michigan, now retired. Her major interest is in theatrical performances, especially performed Shakespeare. She is the author of: The End Crowns All, The Shakespeare Trade, and most recently the Arden edition of The Taming of the Shrew.

Barbara Hodgdon is Adjunct Professor of English at the University of Michigan and Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor Emerita at Drake University. Her previous publications include "The End Crowns All: Closure and Contradiction in Shakespeare's History" (1991), "The First Part of King Henry the Fourth: Texts and Contexts" (1997), and "The Shakespeare Trade: Performances and Appropriations" (1998). She was guest editor for a special issue of "Shakespeare Quarterly" (2002) on Shakespeare films and is currently editing "The Taming of the Shrew" for the Arden 3 series.

W. B. Worthen is Professor of English at the University of Michigan. He is the author of "The Idea of the Actor" (1984), "Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater" (1992), "Shakespeare and the Authority of Performance" (1997), and "Shakespeare and the Force of Modern Performance" (2003). He is also the editor of several volumes, including "The Wadsworth Anthology of Drama."

About the Author

Dr. Edward A. Cook is a Professor of landscape architecture in The Design School at Arizona State University where he teaches courses on urban ecological design, landscapes and sustainability and landscape ecological planning. He has published books and articles focused on his research in urban ecology, green/ecological networks and sustainable urbanism.  He has worked on projects in landscape ecological planning throughout the world and was one of the pioneers in developing planning and design strategies for ecological networks in urban landscapes.

Dr. Jesus J. Lara is Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning in the Knowlton School at the Ohio State University. His research and pedagogy are centered on sustainable urban design, Latino Urbanism, community development, and sociocultural factors in community design, from urban environments and poverty stricken areas to empty suburban malls and commercial areas at the intersection of upscale developments and highway commerce. His work emphasizes the creation of responsive and adaptive urban environments that focus on people and place, using university-community partnerships to explore the potentials for change, redevelopment and improvement.
