About the Author

Irmgard Tischner is Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology at the University of Worcester and associate member of the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England, Bristol. A broad and comprehensive picture of the centrality of 'play' in our lives.

The variety of fields represented in this original and enjoyable book are far broader than psychology or psychoanalysis. The main "hero" is of course Winnicott and, although most of the chapters were written by psychoanalysts or people with a psychoanalytical approach, I was glad that they have been made comprehensible to a layman such as myself. But there are also several interesting chapters written by thinkers from other fields such as music, literature, philosophy, cinema, and history. Although my main interest is in science, more specifically chemistry, I have always been very much engaged in studying and teaching art. Perhaps it's because of this that I have particularly enjoyed the chapter by Itamar Levy on 'The Structure of Space' and his dissertation on Paolo Uccello's masterpiece 'The Hunt in the Forest'. But I believe that readers more interested in fields other than psychotherapy or art, as myself, will find in this book a lot of original and engaging material. A particularly impressive chapter is 'The Personal Testimony' by Yael Rosner, a survival of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi occupation. The chapter is very moving and touching and it shows how play can be vital for human survival and the development of the individual.

As an additional bonus, the spirit of the editor hovers in a passionate way over all the chapters as expressed in the introductions she wrote to them. Many of them tell lovely stories that shed a special and personal light on the subjects under discussion. Overall the book gives a broad and comprehensive picture of the principle that guided the editor: all our lives are based in one way or another on play.

I presume that one can find more and more areas where play is a central component and which are not mentioned in this book. But I suppose that to cover all the areas where play is important would require a book twice as long. However, if that is the case, it is also an invitation for the reader to become more aware of the role of play in all aspects of our lives.

This is a very inspiring book. It leads one to look at and to look for the playful moments of our lives. Those moments, when we play with words, thoughts, ideas, people and enjoy every minute of it. It leads one to dare and create more and more of such moments, which increase our sense of elation and fulfillment. Thank you for this enriching experience.

Drawing from debates on place-based rights and urban indigeneity in the twenty-first century, the book engages with the experiences and collective struggles of Tokyo Ainu in seeking to promote a better understanding of their cultural and political identity and sense of community in the city. Looking in-depth for the first time at the urban context of ritual performance, cultural transmission and the construction of places or ‘hubs’ of Ainu social activity, this book argues that recent government initiatives aimed at fostering a national Ainu policy will ultimately founder unless its architects are able to fully recognize the historical and social complexities of the urban Ainu experience.

Tracing foreign policy thinking developed by Reagan officials and Israeli intellectuals and leaders, the work demonstrates the significant impact this thinking had on US foreign policy after 9-11: ideas such as pre-emptive strikes, regime change and state-sponsorship were elaborated in the Reagan years and would later influence Bush’s Global War on Terror. About the Author

Dr. Michel Demange has devoted his career to regional geology and tectonics of metamorphic and magmatic terranes and to ore deposits. Graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris and holding a Docteur-es-Sciences from the University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI, he has been active in a rich variety of geological projects and investigations around the world. In combination with his teaching and research activities at the École des Mines in Paris, France, he headed various research studies. This book benefits from the great experience in field studies, research and teaching and the wealth of data and images accumulated during his career. This book and its companion volume are both available in French from the Presses de l’École des Mines, Paris.

Combining extensive fieldwork data collected among the Mohmand tribe in the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan with historical and literary sources, Professor Ahmed’s study seeks to construct an ideal-type model of Pukhtun society based on the ideal Code of the Pukhtuns and to analyse the conditions of its maintenance and transformation.

The author’s thesis is that this ideal model exists within Pukhtun society when interaction with larger state systems is minimal and in poor economic zones. In this way he posits an opposition between the Tribal Agencies along the border with Afghanistan, where ecological conditions are poor and state influence minimal, and the Settled Areas under state administration where Pukhtun society is forced away from its ideals.

About the Author

Mirca Madianou is Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at the University of Leicester, UK. She is the author of Mediating the Nation and several articles on the social consequences of the media.

Daniel Miller is Professor of Material Culture at the Department of Anthropology, University College London, UK. His most recent books include Tales from Facebook and Digital Anthropology (edited with Heather Horst).

I got this book for my Globalization of Culture class and I thought it was an easy read and it really allows the reader understand the situation for the Ohillipino mothers and the way it affects their entire family. It's an awesome read.
