Early loss of the caregiver and later behavior problems

This little book should be required reading for everyone who works with kids who have serious behavior problems. Winnicott was a pediatrician and psychoanalyst who had many years of close, intimate contact with families, especially families of troubled children. He makes a convincing case that children who steal, lie, destroy property, assault others, etc. are attempting to compensate for early separation/loss of an important caregiver. He views such behaviors as attempts to coerce the environment into taking notice and "containing" the child. As such, these behaviors are "hopeful", and are viewed as the child's efforts to reclaim the satisfactions that were lost -- to take back what once was theirs. Children who had adequate care that was lost are the children Winnicott suggests become anti-social. There are numerous vignettes of his personal experiences in trying to treat delinquent kids. He makes a compelling argument for early loss as a decisive factor in later delinquent acts. Although he ultimately felt that "treatment" was only possible after an extended period of "containment", he maintained his conviction that these kids have sustained losses too dreadful for them to think about. He was a good-humored and compassionate clinician with an enduring belief in the profound importance of the child's early relationships. People who work with delinquent kids may just find that Winnicott's understanding of children helps them hang on when the going gets tough. I treasure this book. Another great Winnicott book is "Therapeutic Consultations in Child Psychiatry", an out-of-print classic.

This is an excellent demonstration of the underlying psychoanalytic theories so creatively used and explained by Winnicott. The interpretations of the drawings and the single intervention with the child are so subtle and so patient; he simply waits for her to draw it out as she grows safe enough to reveal it to them both.

Nevertheless in many respects it has grown from infancy into a wild child, or as some have said, a wild frontier, almost completely lawless and therefore subject to exploitation and abuse, with all kinds of desperate measures put in place to make it `safe for the children', not to mention the rest of us.

Joanna Kulesza, an assistant professor of international public law at Lodz University in Poland has therefore written a timely and important book advocating international standards of governance. The book should particularly interest legal scholars concerned with international law and international relations.

Practitioners involved in any area of IT law, or for that matter, international trade over the internet will also find it immensely useful, not only as a study of the current Promethean state of internet law, but also as an examination of possibilities and probabilities which will affect internet governance in the future.

This lucid and erudite book begins with a quote from Kofi Annan, who, speaking at the Global Internet Governance Forum in New York in 2004, observed that `the Internet has revolutionized trade, heath, education and indeed the very fabric of human communication and exchange'.

`Clearly, there is a need for governance,' he adds, `but that does not necessarily mean that it has to be done in the traditional way, for something that is so very different.'

Since that quite prescient statement was made, Internet usage worldwide has increased to an estimated 2.5 billion users, or one in three of the world's population. The need for some form of international standard for Internet governance has become urgent.

`Laying down common legal principles governing the Internet as a whole would facilitate the protection of users' rights,' remarks the author - and who would disagree?

The book therefore reveals a broad range of views surrounding the issue of Internet governance. Such topics as international copyright protection, state responsibility regarding cyber-attacks and online protection of privacy are discussed.

A comparative study is made of the way in which different jurisdictions approach the problem; the US, EU, China and Singapore included.

The author's suggested solution revolves around the principle of `International Internet Law' which could evolve, we assume, in a similar way to international environmental law.

An Internet Framework Convention would be required to point the way for international cooperation on regulating the Internet worldwide in an enlightened, ethical manner, ideally in keeping with democratic principles and traditions of free speech.

Any user of the Internet; certainly anyone concerned with its future will find much to consider in this thought provoking book. Researchers in this area will be delighted by the bibliography of some 26 pages, which offers abundant avenues for further reading and enquiry. There is also an extensive table of cases and statutes. About the Author

This book is very thorough, explaining problems with Strasburg's and Meisner's Method acting techniques and going over Adler's and Hagen's techniques. It certainly explained some problems I encountered during my training.

About the Author

Geoff King is Professor of Film Studies at Brunel University and author of five books focused on the independent sector, including American Independent Cinema (2005), Indiewood, USA: Where Hollywood Meets Independent Cinema (2009) and Indie 2.0: Change and Continuity in Contemporary Indie Film (2012).

Claire Molloy is Professor of Film, Television and Digital Media at Edge Hill University. She is the author and editor of three books including Memento (2010), a volume in the 'American Indies' series, and has published widely on various film topics in edited collections and journals.

Yannis Tzioumakis is Lecturer in Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool. He is the author of three books on independent filmmaking, including American Independent Cinema: An Introduction (2006) and Hollywood’s Indies: Classics Divisions, Specialty Labels and the American Film Market (2012). He also co-edits the series ‘American Indies,’ which has published five volumes since 2009.

the changing role of the state and market in higher education;
the blurring of public and private boundaries;
issues of equity and access in a time of global economic turmoil;

the complex interaction of international, national and regional expectations which governments and other stakeholders have of universities and other public and private institutions of higher education.

Hugh Compston is a Professor of Politics at Cardiff University and has published widely on political economy, public policy and climate politics. Recent books include Policy Networks and Policy Change (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009), Climate Change and Political Strategy (edited) (Taylor and Francis, 2010), and Turning Down the Heat: The Politics of Climate Policy in Affluent Democracies (edited with Ian Bailey) (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008).

It reveals the critical role of its ideology (based on a selective interpretation of Islamic theology and history) in the party’s recruiting success. Using primary sources, including the group’s publications and documents, official reports, alongside interviews with scholars, security experts, mullahs, journalists, diplomats, government officials and group members, it covers the rise of political Islam in the post-Soviet Central Asia, alongside the origins and current status of Hizb ut-Tahrir - its leadership, ideology, political methodology and party structure and its rise in the region from Kazakhstan to Russia and China. Although the organization has received less international examination partly because it has advocated a non-violent approach toward its goals, this book sketches its prospective future relationship to violence in this key region.

About the Author

Emmanuel Karagiannis is Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece. He also teaches at the Joint War College of Hellenic Armed Forces, and the Hellenic National Defense College, Greece. His latest book, Energy and Security in the Caucasus, was also published by Routledge.
